Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy livestreamed an episode of The Tweedy Show last night with his son Spencer Tweedy playing drums. The pair performed a gorgeous cover of Television’s “Venus” in honor of the band’s co-founding guitarist Tom Verlaine, who died on Saturday at age 73.

“Venus” appeared on Television’s landmark 1977 debut album, Marquee Moon. After performing the cover, Jeff Tweedy spoke about Verlaine’s influence, which often rightly focused on his guitar playing, while also noting how significant Verlaine’s songwriting was on his own work.

“That was not easy,” Jeff said following the cover performance. “I just wanted to play that. Obviously, I’m not doing the guitar parts justice. But the main point is, he [Verlaine] gets a lot of accolades for changing the way a lot of people look at a guitar, but he changed a lot of the way I look at writing songs. And that’s a perfect song. I can’t imagine writing a song that good.

Sunday’s The Tweedy Show materialized from Jeff and Spencer’s rehearsal for the upcoming Cayamo Cruise which departs from Miami on February 10. Also performed was a cover of “Houses” by Elyse Weinberg and the Jewish prayer “Mi Shebeirach” which Spencer dedicated to Tyre Nichols’ mother, RowVaughn Wells.

Tweedy originals “I Know What It’s Like,” “Gwendolyn” and “Half-Asleep” were also performed. The show ended in typical fashion with Roger Miller’s “Reincarnation.”
