Break Science Returns With Meditative ‘Mecha Flora’ EP [Stream]

63

After nearly five years of intermittent stand-alone singles, livetronic duo Break Science is back with a new EP, Mecha Flora. Out now, the six-track collection arrives as the first extended release from drummer Adam Deitch (Lettuce) and keyboardist Borahm Lee (Pretty Lights Live) since 2018’s Grid of Souls.

Announced last month with the title single, Mecha Flora builds on Break Science’s sterling live reputation for putting forth contemplative live electronic music. Teaming up with Niko Is and Lil Fangz to add vocals to a pair of tracks, the EP inspires inner reflection and provides the shortcut to a meditative flow state.

This introspective angle comes as a result of the EP’s production during COVID lockdowns. Deitch, a recent transplant to the musical mecca of Denver, took full advantage of the seven-minute walking distance between his and Lee’s houses. The duo captured many of Mecha Flora‘s tracks on the drum kit and grand piano in Lee’s living room.

The release captures the wide range of musical muses that captivate Deitch and Lee. The hip-hop swagger of “Live Twice” featuring Niko Is builds to an EDM-induced climax before the bottom drops out and Lee’s dreamy keys take the song to a new plane of existence. Break Science’s blissful capabilities envelop the EP’s closer “Crystal Lake”, with ethereal guitar coalescing with spacey synthesizers to induce a trancelike state for Meca Flora‘s final four minutes.

Break Science is also set to perform at Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival in Florida next month where Deitch and Lee will take part in the PoWoW! superjam alongside Rick Mitorotonda and Peter Anspach (Goose), Big Boi (OutKast), The Free Nationals (Anderson .Paak), and more.
