The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has revealed an eclectic slate of 14 nominees under consideration for induction in 2023. Among the list are a number of notable first-time nominees including The White StripesWillie NelsonWarren Zevon, and Missy Elliott.

The full list of 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees also includes Kate BushSheryl CrowIron MaidenJoy Divison/New OrderCyndi LauperGeorge MichaelRage Against The MachineSoundgardenThe Spinners, and A Tribe Called Quest. Crow, Lauper, Michael, and Joy Divison/New Order are also making their first appearances on the ballot.

The White Stripes and Elliott both fetched nominations in their first year of eligibility, with the hip-hop singer last year celebrating a quarter century since her debut album Supa Dupa Fly. Though The White Stripes’ self-titled debut album didn’t come out until 1999, the committee is counting Jack and Meg White‘s 1998 debut single “Let’s Shake Hands” in order to meet the requirement of 25 years since an artist’s first commercial recordings.

While Kate Bush previously appeared on the ballot in 2018, 2021, and 2022, she stands a much better chance of induction thanks to the reemergence of her 1985 single “Running Up The Hill”. The track had its own pop culture moment last year after inclusion throughout season 4 of Stranger Things rocketed the song to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and inspired a cover by current pop sensation Halsey at Governors Ball.

The 2023 list of possible inductees also includes the long-awaited nomination of Warren Zevon. Largely regarded as one of the Hall’s greatest snubs, the seminal singer-songwriter—who died of pleural mesothelioma in 2003—has been eligible since 1995, 25 years after the release of his oft-overlooked 1970 debut album Wanted Dead or Alive. Topping that is Willie Nelson, who has been eligible for nomination since the Rock Hall began in 1983. Following in the footsteps of fellow country icon Dolly Parton who was (reluctantly, at first) inducted into the Hall last year, these back-to-back nominations could open a door for more country greats to enter the institution.

Soul group The Spinners will make their fourth appearance on the ballot, though it has been seven years since the ensemble’s last nomination. The ’70s R&B vocal group behind such hits as “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love”, “Working My Way Back to You”, “I’ll Be Around”, and “The Rubberband Man” was nominated in 2012, 2015, and 2016. In a class featuring a mix of ’90s alt-rock greats, a country icon, pop singers, metal forefathers, post-punk originators, and plenty more, The Spinners somehow still seem the odd men out.

Should Elliott earn induction to the Hall, she will join a steadily growing community of hip-hop acts in the Cleveland institution. Just last year, Eminem entered the pantheon of Rock Hall of Famers, following behind other foundational artists like Jay-ZPublic EnemyNotorious B.I.G.Tupac ShakurBeastie BoysN.W.A.Run DMC, and more.

The Joy Division/New Order nomination marks a rare instance of a band and its spin-off both being nominated as one entry. New Order formed with most of the Joy Division lineup following singer/songwriter Ian Curtis‘ suicide in 1980 after which point the remaining members continued on under a new banner. The spin-off nomination previously occurred with the Rascals/Young Rascals and Faces/Small Faces, though those spin-off band names were derived from the original, as well as Parliament/Funkadelic.

Of the 14 nominees, between five and seven of the top artists selected through fan ballots and the institutions’ internal voting body will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Those inductees will be announced in May. Fans can vote online every day through April 28th on the Rock Hall website or at the museum in Cleveland. Organizers have not announced where the inductions will take place, though last year’s ceremony was held in Los Angeles and the event typically alternates between L.A. and Cleveland.
