Tedeschi Trucks Band on Saturday night closed out a three-show run at Nashville, TN’s revered Ryman Auditorium with a memorable performance featuring a surprise appearance by Lukas Nelson.
The show began with “Anyhow” and “Chevrolet” (by Lonnie Young, Ed Young and Lonnie Young, Jr.), the third instance of the combo in 2023. Both the revival of the “Chevrolet” cover after a five-year absence and its new pairing with “Anyhow” are no coincidence: An “Anyhow”-based Chevy commercial currently making the rounds on national TV has created a commotion among fans, and “Anyhow” > “Chevrolet” is like a wink and a cheeky stir of the pot. Say what you will about the ad, but there’s always room for a self-aware sense of humor. Bravo, TTB.
After working through “Last Night in the Rain” and a rendition of “Do I Look Worried” featuring one of the stronger Derek Trucks guitar solos of the night, Tedeschi Trucks Band continued with I Am The Moon selections “Emmaline”, “Yes We Will”, and “Take Me As I Am” arranged around an elated take on The Derek Trucks Band favorite “Joyful Noise”. Images of the late Kofi Burbridge shined down over the band as Susan Tedeschi applied angelic poise to a set-closing “Idle Wind”.
While fans at the Ryman chatted with friends, hit the head, grabbed a drink, and leisurely awaited the second half of the show, Derek Trucks never stopped moving. Instead, he used his setbreak to scoot across Broadway to Bridgestone Arena for a two-song sit-in with Billy Strings.
Derek may have been running a bit late coming back for his own second set—the band returned from setbreak as an eleven-piece—but fans at the Ryman hardly noticed as Tedeschi enchanted the storied stage with a medley of John Prine classic “Angel From Montgomery” and Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter gem “Sugaree”.
Trucks was back in action for “Playing With My Emotions” and made his presence known with piercing slide guitar work on “Shame” and Blind Joe Reynolds‘ “Outside Woman Blues”. Derek never spoke a word about his little intermission adventure—in true Trucks fashion—though it didn’t take long for the news to ripple through the audience, adding an extra layer of excitement to the festivities.
While Trucks had just played “surprise guest” at Bridgestone Arena less than an hour prior, he and his band had a guest of their own up their sleeves back at the Mother Church: guitarist Lukas Nelson, of Promise of the Real fame. With Nelson in tow, Tedeschi Trucks Band took the Nashville crowd on a wild, elongated ride through “Leaving Trunk” (Sleepy John Estes) and “Volunteered Slavery” (Rahsaan Roland Kirk) featuring an abundance of six-string fireworks throughout.

Once Lukas made his exit, Derek, Susan, and company unleashed a blast of blues by way of Bobby “Blue” Bland‘s “I Pity The Fool” before wrapping up a stellar second set with “Made Up Mind”. After a brief encore break, the band returned to cap its three-night stay in Nashville in grandiose fashion with a stunning “Midnight In Harlem” and an emphatic “Show Me” (Joe Tex).
