Watch Bruce Springsteen & E Street Band Tear Through ‘Cadillac Ranch’ Tour Debut In Austin

Bruce Springsteen‘s first tour with the E Street Band since 2017 hit Austin on Thursday. The Boss and his longtime backing band dusted off the Texas-inspired “Cadillac Ranch” at the Moody Center to start the concert’s seven-song encore.

Saxophonist Jake Clemons was the latest E Street Band member to miss a show due to COVID. However, guitarist Nils Lofgren returned to action after he was unable to perform in Houston. Saxophonist Ed Manion covered Clemons’ parts last night in Austin.

Legendary country musician George Strait emerged at the start of the show to introduce The Boss to the Austin faithful. “Austin, Texas! It’s my honor tonight to introduce to you a man that really needs no introduction,” Strait said before adding, “Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band!”

“No Surrender” returned to the opening slot it held down all tour besides Tuesday night in Houston. The 19-piece ensemble stuck to a similar setlist as other stops with “Cadillac Ranch” the main exception. Additionally, Springsteen brought back the recently revived “If I Was The Priest” for its second E Street Band performance. Also of note, “Don’t Play That Song” was dropped for the first time this tour.

Bruce Springsteen took the title for “Cadillac Ranch” from an installation in Amarillo, Texas featuring 10 Cadillac cars, each buried nose-down. The song originally appeared on The Boss’ fifth studio album, 1980’s The River. Drummer Max Weinberg played the song’s signature intro while Springsteen explained the band was partnering with the Central Texas Food Bank on Thursday. Bruce asked fans to be generous with their donations to the area’s largest food bank. The 73-year-old musician altered the “Drivin’ alone through the Wisconsin night” to reference Austin.
