Leftover Salmon will look to its Grass Roots with a new collection of covers from early influences Bob Dylan, The Seldom Scene, David Bromberg, the Grateful Dead, and more. Out on May 19th via Compass Records, the 10-track collection features contributions from Billy Strings, Oliver Wood (The Wood Brothers), and Darol Anger (The David Grisman Quartet).
The first Grass Roots preview hears Leftover Salmon co-founder Vince Herman taking on Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks classic “Simple Twist of Fate”. The uptempo bluegrass rendition of the folk standard takes on added comfort coming from Herman’s weathered voice. Altogether, the cover carries the feel of an impromptu campground jam session, which is exactly what Leftover Salmon is aiming for with Grass Roots.
Having celebrated the group’s 30th anniversary in 2019, Leftover Salmon is looking back to its humble beginnings with this next project. Inspired by that first jam session at a Telluride Bluegrass Festival campground that brought together the Salmon Heads and The Left Hand String Band, Grass Roots contains covers similar to those heard around the campfire over three decades ago. By bringing in a mix of contemporaries, inspirations, and those the band has inspired to play along, Leftover Salmon shows just how much influence it has had on the modern jamgrass environment. The album will also mark the band’s first since adding multi-instrumentalist Jay Starling to the lineup last May.
