Metallica Unveils Hard-Hitting ’72 Seasons’ Title Track

Famed rockers Metallica unveiled the +7-minute new single “72 Seasons” accompanied by a Tim Saccenti-directed video. The cut is the title track from the band’s 12th studio album, which arrives via Blackened Recordings on April 14.

72 Seasons, the group’s first record since 2017’s Hardwired…To Self-Destruct, features 12 tracks spanning a total of 77 minutes. Metallica previously previewed the album by sharing “Lux Æterna,” “Screaming Suicide” and “If Darkness Had a Son.”

Frontman James Hetfield detailed the meaning of the title, writing:

“72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told ‘who we are’ by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry.”

Hetfield penned “72 Seasons” with bandmates Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett. Watch the video for the song that opens the upcoming LP below:
