Watch ALO Enlist Rainbow Girls For ABBA & Britney Spears Covers In California

43

ALO resumed their Tour d’Amour XVI in California between Wednesday and Saturday nights. After presenting “An Evening With ALO” in Felton on Wednesday, Rainbow Girls kicked off the action and sat in with the headliners on Thursday in Santa Barbara, Friday in Venice and Saturday in Solana Beach.

Thursday’s show at SOhO was a hometown concert for ALO, who are celebrating 25 years as a band in 2023. Guitarist Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz, keyboardist Zach Gill, bassist Steve Adams and drummer Ezra Lipp opened with “Hot Damn” in Santa Barbara. Bookending the night was an encore of “Divine Fall” and “Goodnight Song.” All three tunes are featured on ALO’s recently released studio album, Silver Saturdays.

ALO delivered a career-spanning performance in between cuts from Silver Saturdays in Santa Barbara. Oldies “Blew Out The Walls,” “Wasting Time” and “Cowboys And Chorus Girls” made the setlist as did a “Walls Of Jericho” encompassing Taj Mahal’s “Further On Down The Road.” Rainbow Girls made their first appearance in between “Cowboys And Chorus Girls” and “Walls Of Jericho” at SOhO. The trio consisting of Vanessa May, Erin Chapin and Caitlin Gowdey handled lead vocals on a cover of Britney Spears’ 1999 hit “Baby One More Time.”

This year’s Tour d’Amour pulled into Venice on Friday for a St. Patrick’s Day gala at The Venice West. Once again ALO pulled from Silver Saturdays to get their first set underway. This time, “Growing Your Hands Back” got the call to open. Next came performances of “Push” off 2015’s Tangle Of Time, “All Alone” from 2007’s Roses & Clover and “Dead Still Dance” off 2012’s Sounds Like This.

Rainbow Girls emerged after “Dead Still Dance” to sing “We’ve All Got To Reckon With The Fall,” a song they recorded with Lipp during the pandemic for his 2022 solo album, The Softened Sky. The trio stuck around to front ALO on “Take A Chance On Me,” a cover of ABBA’s 1978 smash.

ALO ended the first set in Venice sans guests by pairing Silver Saturdays’ “Rare Air” and beloved classic “Maria.” The second set began with “Girls I Wanna Lay You Down” and ended with a “Room For Bloomin’” that saw the band celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by incorporating covers of Irish ballad “Danny Boy” and “Where The Streets Have No Name” by Ireland’s U2. The quartet took on Van Morrison’s “Into The Mystic” as the encore to wrap up Friday’s show.

Saturday’s concert at the Belly Up in Solana Beach began with the beloved “Plastic Bubble” and a “Cowboys And Chorus Girls” that included elements of Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner.” After “Rewind” and “Not Old Yet,” ALO went back to Silver Saturdays for “Sparrow” before ending the frame with a cover of The Doobie Brothers’ “Listen To The Music” and Roses & Clover cut “Lady Loop.” Rainbow Girls contributed to a rendition of the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” as part of a second set heavy on Silver Saturdays material. ALO punctuated the night with an encore featuring Supertramp’s “Take The Long Way Home” and a “BBQ” featuring a trip to “Swingtown” within.

ALO’s Tour d’Amour moves to The Fillmore in San Francisco on Saturday.
