Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio sat for a game of “Name That Room” on SiriusXM’s Phish Radio. Host Ari Fink played clips from past Phish jams and had Anastasio attempt to zero in on the location where the jam took place. Video of “Name That Room” can be viewed on-demand via the SXM App.
Fink picked four segments from the past 30 years as he tried to stump Trey. Anastasio gave his best guesses with just a little help from Ari.
Without spoiling the game element, “Name That Room” concluded with a discussion about Trey Anastasio’s guitar rig. Anastasio recalled he wanted to change his guitar sound right around the time Phish covered David Bowie’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars on Halloween 2016 in Las Vegas. “I love my old guitar sound but it was not reliant on power tubes. It was a more processed guitar sound at the front end,” Trey explained. “Power tube distortion is where the emotion is.”
The guitarist began a journey in which he rebuilt every component of his rig from top-to-bottom. “It’s not just buying a new amp, you have to do everything,” Trey noted. “You have to match the speaker to the amp and then try grill cloth, we tried every kind of wood for the cabinets,” he added. Anastasio feels he’s now done tinkering.
“I’m now at a point where I’m like ‘don’t touch it!,’” the guitarist said of his locked-in rig. “Once you stop changing it you get more and more and more comfortable.” He advised fans to listen to December’s MSG shows for a taste of his new sound.
How well does @treyanastasio know his own @phish jams and the venues where they went down? Find out during ‘Name That Room’ premiering today at 5pm ET.
