Coldplay Welcomes Gipsy Kings For Impromptu Tina Turner Tribute In Barcelona

44

Coldplay began a four-show stand at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Barcelona on Wednesday as part of their massive, multi-stage Music Of The Spheres Tour. The British band welcomed flamenco duo Gipsy Kings for a tribute to the legendary Tina Turner, who sadly died that same day.

Coldplay kicked off the concert — which frontman reportedly dedicated to Tina Turner after learning about her passing just hours earlier — with “Higher Power” from their 2021 album Music Of The Spheres. The band naturally dipped heavily from their latest studio LP also performing “Human Heart,” “People of the Pride,” “Infinity Sign” and more.

Coldplay also included older favorites in the setlist like “Yellow,” “Clocks” and “Sky Full Of Stars.” Following the latter as Coldplay and Gipsy Kings took the “C Stage,” Martin addressed the audience. “Thank you to Tina for being sweet, not just to us, but the whole world. And making us all so loved and entertained.” Martin then led the bands through an impromptu rendition of “Proud Mary,” a Creedence Clearwater Revival song Tina made her own, with plenty of audience participation.

Gipsy Kings would stay on to lead Coldplay through their own “Bamboléo” as well as Italian artist Domenico Modugno’s Grammy-winning song “Nel blu, dipinto di blu.” Coldplay then went it alone to close the concert with “Fix You” from their 2005 album X&Y and Music Of The Spheres’ “Biutyful.”
