Five months after the sudden death of Jeff Beck, rock n’ roll luminaries from throughout the ages honored the guitar hero with a pair of tribute concerts in London on Monday and Tuesday. Helmed by Beck’s former Yardbirds bandmate Eric Clapton, the shows at Royal Albert Hall featured guest appearances from Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Gary Clark Jr., Billy Gibbons, Kirk Hammett, John McLaughlin, Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Robert Randolph, and many more.
The two sold-out concerts stuck to a general format with Clapton performing the bulk of the two-set show and welcoming special guests throughout. During his main performance, Clapton dug through Beck’s extended discography including beloved originals “Beck’s Bolero” and “Freeway Jam” alongside the late guitarist’s favorite covers from the bluesmen whose ranks he’s joined, like Buddy Guy and Muddy Waters.

Beck’s contemporaries and admirers of the last half-century all came out to pay their respects. From his earliest days cutting his teeth with Clapton in the legendary Yardbirds through his solo career in the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart, all the way to his contemporary collaborator Johnny Depp, along with the generations of guitarists he inspired like Derek and Susan, Beck’s impact on contemporary music was shown through his legions of mourners. While the array of A-listers shuffled on and off stage, holding it down throughout the night were Jeff Beck band members Rhonda Smith, Anika Nilles, and Robert Stevenson who took over the stage for an interlude between Clapton’s main sets.
The two Jeff Beck tribute concerts were filled with highlights, including Derek and Susan joining in on “The Sky Is Crying”, McLaughlin helming a cover of Mahavishnu Orchestra‘s “You Know, You Know”, Depp, Hammett, and Gibbons on John Lennon‘s “Isolation’”, “Freeway Jam” with Clapton and Randolph, a fittingly emotional “People Get Ready” with Clapton, Stewart, and Clark, along with dozens of other collaborations. Capping off a show with this kind of star power was no easy feat, so each night Clapton brought out all the hired guns for huge takes on “Going Down” with every axe-slinger and special guest on stage.
Just before beginning the big finish on night one, Clapton lamented, “I wish he were here,” only for someone in the crowd to belt out, “He is here!”
