Foo Fighters are officially back on the road, with the fresh face of Josh Freese behind the drums in place of the late Taylor Hawkins. During the band’s third-ever show with Freese on Sunday closing out Sonic Temple in Columbus, OH, Foo Fighters took a moment to introduce the audience with a medley of covers from Freese’s tenured career.
While Freese wasn’t exactly a household name before he joined the Foos and started playing stadiums, audiences may be more familiar with the drummer than they think. As Dave Grohl hyperbolized midway through Foo Fighters’ Sonic Temple set, “This guy has put out like 400 f–ing albums.”
“We’ve known Josh for a really, really long time,” Grohl said. “You might not think you know him, but you’ve heard this mother–er for the last 20 years.”
Following his glowingly profane introduction, Freese counted off the unmistakable rhythm of Devo‘s “Whip It”. Freese joined the new wave act (from nearby Akron) when the band reformed in 1996. The following decade, he joined another well-known Ohio band Nine Inch Nails (hailing from Cleveland) and served with them from 2005–2008. It’s likely little coincidence that Grohl, a native of Warren, OH, cherry-picked the Buckeye State bands from Freese’s history. Foo Fighters represented Josh’s time with NIN via a snippet of “March of the Pigs”, and also touched on Freese’s brief time as a session musician for Puddle of Mudd with part of “Blurry”.
