Festival season began with a proper kickoff this past weekend in Gulf Shores, AL at Hangout Music Festival. Even with the looming threats of storms, the weather held out, and fans were met with a hot and sweaty weekend full of amazing music and not enough sunscreen. This year’s lineup had various musical genres for everyone—from Red Hot Chili Peppers and Skrillex to The Backseat Lovers, Kevin Gates, Paramore, and others.
Day one started out strong with A Hundred Drums dropping a DJ set to get the crowd warmed up and pumped up for the weekend ahead. The energy picked up when Tove Lo hit the stage and performed one of the most dynamic and lively sets of the afternoon. As day slowly turned into night, each stage was packed with fans catching acts such as Russ, Gryffin, and Thundercat, all singing as loud as they could along with the performers.
Fans were anxiously awaiting the Friday night performance of Rainbow Kitten Surprise, but unfortunately, due to unknown reasons, the band pulled out of the festival, later canceling all remaining tour dates and announcing a hiatus citing an unspecified medical crisis in the band. Louis The Child took the stage in place of RKS and did not disappoint the crowd.
Festivalgoers packed out the Shein Surf stage for the first headliner of the night, Lil Nas X. Taking the stage riding a giant fake horse, fans were screaming with excitement as he performed an insanely high-energy set with background dancers and a stunning stage setup that was the most elaborate of the night. Audience members then walked across the sand to the Hangout stage for one of the most legendary acts of the weekend, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Performing all of their hits including “Californication”, “Dani California”, and “Can’t Stop”, RHCP came out very strong with Flea running on stage doing a roundoff and a cartwheel. The audience was in awe for the whole hour singing along word for word.
Vibes were high going into day two, as it had a lineup that fans were excited for. Flipturn took the stage early to start off the day with a set that brought a massive crowd. With a couple hours before the next sets, fans had the opportunity to take part in many activities around the festival such as a ferris wheel, roller skating, and just hanging out on the beach and soaking up the sun. The vibes continued mid-day as Daniel Nunnelee and Coin took the stage, both delivering amazing sets that kept the fans going into the night. The rest of the evening was packed with talent, featuring performances from AJR, John Summit, Sabrina Carpenter, Flume, and Ferg. This was all leading up to two of the most anticipated acts of the weekend, Paramore and SZA. Both performed unbelievable sets with crowds packed in and stretching back for as far as the eye can see, screaming with joy, happiness, and singing along to every word.
With clouds covering the sky on day three, fans stormed the beach to get a good spot for the first act of the day, The 502s, who delivered an exciting, high-energy set that got everyone up and moving, setting the tone for the rest of the day. The sun started to emerge as the day went on and concertgoers bopped around from stage to stage to catch rivetting sets from Jessie Murph and Hippie Sabotage. Yung Gravy started the evening with a highly anticipated set that did not disappoint.
From the Hangout stage, people walked across the beach to the Surf stage to catch Noah Kahan’s emotional set, which left everyone with warm hearts and smiles on their faces. The energy kept up the rest of the night with artists including Mayday Parade, Elohim, The Kid Laroi, and Kevin Gates, followed by one of the most sought-after sets of the weekend, Skrillex. He came out strong and instantly had everyone jumping around and dancing for an hour. The high energy continued as people walked across the beach one more time to the Hangout stage for the closer of the weekend, Calvin Harris. His set was the best way to close out the weekend with music that had built on the dynamics of Skrillex’s set. Fans walked out as a firework show lit up the sky.
With this year’s Hangout having come to a close, we can’t wait to see what is in store for next year.
