My Morning Jacket Debuts Soulful New Original At Tour Opener In Alabama

My Morning Jacket kicked off their 2023 World Tour last night in Mobile, Alabama. The 19-song performance at the Saenger Theatre included the debut of a new original that features the band’s signature sound.

The band — guitarists Jim James and Carl Broemel, bassist Tom Blankenship, keyboardist Bo Koster and drummer Patrick Hallahan — presented a run of fan-favorite classics “Mahgeetah,” “Lay Low,” “Golden,” “I’m Amazed” and “One Big Holiday” released between 2003 and 2008 to get the evening underway. Next came “Lucky To Be Alive,” which along with “Love Love Love” and “Least Expected” were the three songs played on Sunday from the group’s latest album, 2021’s My Morning Jacket.

The first My Morning Jacket cut of the evening was followed by a pair of title tracks in “Circuital” (2011) and “Evil Urges” (2008). Jim James and his bandmates then looked to The Waterfall II for “Feel You,” ahead of the aforemented “Love Love Love” and The Waterfall standout “Compound Fracture.” Next, My Morning Jacket went back to The Waterfall II in performing “Wasted.”

My Morning Jacket unveiled their latest original after “Wasted.” The Marvin Gaye-esque song features the lyrics “Just Tell Me How To Move” repeated in the chorus, yet the title was noted as “Tell Me How” on the band’s stage setlist. It’s unclear what the official title is as of press time.

James delivered a passionate reading of the lyrics while Koster provided an intense synthesizer solo towards the end of the tune. Watch fan-shot footage of My Morning Jacket performing their newest song below:

The premiere came before My Morning Jacket linked “Least Expected,” “Holdin’ On To Black Metal” and “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 2” to conclude their main set at the Mobile Saenger. The quintet punctuated the evening with an encore featuring “Steam Engine,” “Spring (Among The Living)” and “Wordless Chorus.” Next up for MMJ is a concert tonight in Jackson, Mississippi.

My Morning Jacket recently announced a fall tour. The 14-show run will find the quintet playing three multi-night stands. Each will begin with a show celebrating the 20th anniversary of their 2003 album, It Still Moves, featuring a complete performance of the LP and more.
