PREMIERE: Rush Sturges Blends Roots & Rap On New ‘Lessons In Folk Hop’ Single, “Capsized” [Video]

29

Equal parts musician, filmmaker, and kayaking legend, Rush Sturges is known for many things—and known for being known for many things. His new album, Lessons in Folk Hop, is a masterclass in the why-choose-one philosophy that has defined his exceptional life and career, and his latest single, “Capsized”, premiering today exclusively via Live For Live Music, offers a perfect illustration of the alchemy he creates by fusing disparate elements in new and creative ways.

Featuring a raw, bluesy chorus sung by emerging folk star Matthew Jo, “Capsized” pairs Sturges’ straight-from-the-heart rapping with a down-home Americana sound and top-notch production courtesy of Los Lobos‘ Steve Berlin and Rudy Slizewski, leader of the Portland band TapWater. Sturges characterized the track as “a life-affirming anthem … for listeners who don’t box themselves in and constantly explore new paths.”

Following the previous single “Wild Places” featuring John Craigie and the Shook Twins, “Capsized” arrives today with a cinematic music video produced by Sturges’ own River Roots productions and written and directed by Christopher Brown. It will appear alongside additional singles “Growing Up”, “Live or Die”, and “Northern California” when the album drops this fall via River Roots Records.

As the title suggests, Lessons in Folk Hop blends elements of Americana, roots, and folk music with Sturges’ signature rapping and other hip-hop elements. Producer Rudy Slizewski explained that part of the concept for the album was to produce a hip-hop record with tracks played by a live band. Take his songwriting expertise, combine it with Sturges’ heady yet down-to-earth lyricism, and throw them in the studio with Grammy-winning producer Steve Berlin, TapWater, and a host of collaborators from Sturges’ native Northern California and beyond, and the result is a record as one-of-a-kind as Rush himself. Scroll down to watch an album teaser detailing some of the production process.
