Preservation Hall Jazz Band Hosts All-Star NOLA Superjam At Greenwich Town Party [Videos]

Preservation Hall Jazz Band teamed up with an enormous pool of high-profile artists from New Orleans and beyond on Saturday for a superjam at the annual Greenwich Town Party in Greenwich, CT.

Following a day full of performances by The RevivalistsMavis StaplesDirty Dozen Brass BandPete Francis, and more, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, the long-running New Orleans institution, took the reins for the collaborative headlining set. Curated by Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s Ben Jaffe and decorated guitarist/producer Eric Krasno, the 2.5-hour performance showcased not just the music of New Orleans—and its beloved creators themselves—but the ways in which NOLA music culture has rippled out into the world at large.

After Preservation Hall Jazz Band spent the first portion of the performance setting the mood for the Crescent City-style throwdown in Connecticut, Krasno, Ivan Neville (Dumpstaphunk), Tony Hall (Dumpstaphunk), Raymond Weber, Erica Falls, and more joined as a sort of secondary “house band” unit to guide the proceedings from jazz into funk with a string of New Orleans favorites.

The stream of special guests continued to intensify as Celisse joined in on guitar for a pair of tunes including a sneering, Tony Hall-led rendition of Led Zeppelin‘s “Ramble On”. After Cyril and Ivan took turns leading the Preservation Hall Jazz Band contingent through gospel-soul classics, Wyclef Jean and Tarriona “Tank” Ball (Tank and the Bangas) appeared onstage with the Krasno-led funk squad for a pair of hits from the Fugees catalog, “Ready or Not” and “Killing Me Softly”, with Ball putting her uniquely animated spin on the parts originated by Lauryn Hill. After Ball took her leave, Wyclef grabbed a guitar and stuck around to lead the band through “I Shot The Sheriff”.

Big Chief Monk Boudreaux and his krewe of Mardi Gras Indians had been roaming the event’s grounds spreading Big Easy cheer throughout the day, so it was only a matter of time before they joined the party onstage. In full regalia, Boudreaux and company marched up to add some flavor to a rousing performance of Mardi Gras anthem “Iko Iko” featuring special guests George Porter Jr. (The Meters) and Harry Connick Jr., while Wyclef hung around to connect the dots between New Orleans’ French Quarter and his native Haiti’s French roots with a bilingual freestyle rap verse.

With the decorated Connick still manning the piano and The Meters’ Porter holding down the low end, Trombone Shorty joined in to help lead a thundering take on Meters/Neville Brothers staple “Fire on the Bayou”. The highlights continued as Erica Falls, Celisse, Tank, and Jolynda Kiki Chapman stepped into the spotlight in feather boas for a performance of the NOLA-referencing Labelle classic “Lady Marmalade”.

As time began to wind down, the evening’s final guest, beloved “Soul Queen of New Orleans” Irma Thomas, took the stage to lead the band through “Time Is On My Side”, which she recorded in 1964, and signature Tina Turner song “The Best”, which she covered on her Grammy-nominated 1991 album, Live! Simply the Best. With feelings of love and loss still reverberating following Turner’s passing last week, Irma Thomas was then joined in the spotlight by Celisse and Erica Falls for a stirring “Proud Mary”. The performance finally came to an appropriately festive conclusion with an all-hands rendition of “When The Saints Go Marching In”.
