Guitarist Eric Clapton presented the first of two star-studded tribute concerts honoring the late Jeff Beck last night at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Legendary axeman Jeff Beck died at age 78 in January after suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis. The 26-song performance featured a who’s who of iconic rockers that came together at the end of the night to load the stage for the evening’s “Going Down” finale.

“I wish he was here,” Eric Clapton said as nearly 20 musicians assembled on stage. Derek Trucks, Ronnie Wood, Gary Clark Jr., Susan Tedeschi, Johnny Depp, Kirk Hammett, Doyle Bramhall II, Billy Gibbons and John McLaughlin joined Clapton as the nine-guitar attack on “Going Down,” a song featured on the Jeff Beck Group’s self-titled fourth and final studio album. Backing duties throughout the evening were shared by Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck’s bands with multiple members of each ensemble contributing to the finale.

Eric Clapton handled lead vocal duties assisted by Rod Stewart, Joss Stone, Imelda May and Olivia Safe. Robert Randolph was also aboard on sacred steel.

The six-minute “Going Down” featured guitar solos from Clapton, Clark Jr., McLaughlin, Depp, Trucks and Tedeschi in that order. Slowhand also filled in the gaps with furious riffs while singing.
