Neil Young To Focus On Rarities During Summer 2023 Acoustic Tour

As reported, Neil Young will finally end a four-year touring hiatus this summer. Young previewed what will be an acoustic tour of theaters starting on the West Coast during a live Zoom video call held yesterday with Patron level Neil Young Archives subscribers. While the dates and venues will be revealed on Friday, the legendary musician thrilled fans by telling them he’s been rehearsing songs he’s never performed live for inclusion in the upcoming shows.

“I don’t want to come back and do the same songs again,” Young noted as per Rolling Stone. “I’ll feel like I was on some sort of carnival ride. I’d rather be doing these others songs I haven’t done…I won’t have to compare how I’m doing ‘Heart of Gold’ to [how I played it in] 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, 2020…”

Neil Young explained he’s prepped a list of approximately 15 songs for the soon-to-be-announced trek. Among them are “Song X” from Mirror Ball, a 1995 album made in collaboration with Pearl Jam, as well as Trans (1982) outtake “If You Got Love” and Sleeps With Angels (1994) gem “Prime Of Life” according to Rolling Stone’s report. “I did a demo of [“If You Got Love”] a few years [after Trans] with a synclavier, a drum machine, harmonica, and some effects,” Young added. “I listened to it [recently], and it turned me on again. I’m now doing it with the organ and harmonica. It’s pretty cool.”

A few staples will also be played for casual fans with Young stating 80% of each concert will consist of songs generally known only by hardcore fans. “They’re not new songs,” Young clarified of the live debuts he’s working on. “They’re old songs. But I wake up with them in my head every morning. They are songs that apply to my life right now, and apply to everyone’s lives in this era that we’re in. Some of them were written 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago, but never really played live.”

Young did give a hint as to where and when the tour will start. Neil confirmed the run will begin with a residency at a West Coast “tiny, little unknown theater that’s close to one of the most well-known theaters in the world.”

In April Neil Young made his return to performing in concert with appearances at the Light Up The Blues benefit and Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday celebration. Young also played two songs at an anti-logging rally in February, his first public performance since 2019.
