Roots Picnic returned to Philadelphia, PA this weekend for its 15th anniversary celebration in a newly expanded, three-day format. The 2023 edition of the popular hip-hop festival, curated by The Roots‘ Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter alongside Live Nation Urban,

The festivities began on Friday, June 2nd with an arena-sized stand-up comedy performance by Dave Chappelle and The Roots at Wells Fargo Center. Following the separately ticketed arena event, The Roots and their star-studded network of musicians both classic and contemporary set up shop on two stages at The Mann Center in Fairmount Park for two full days of music on Saturday and Sunday, June 3rd and 4th.

Among the highlights of the weekend’s music lineup were performances by Usher, Lil Uzi Vert, Glorilla, Lucky Daye, Ari Lennox, Yussef Dayes, Adam Blackstone, and more. The 2023 edition of Roots Picnic also featured a number of special sets and historic reunions. On Saturday, State Property, the Philly hip-hop crew that achieved national attention in the early 2000s, reunited for a special performance before members of The Roots and more backed The Isley Brothers and Roy Ayers during a unique Soulquarians “Icons” live set. Later in the evening, a billed performance by Ms. Lauryn Hill turned into a surprise Fugees reunion when she brought up Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel to close out her set. On Sunday, The Roots’ Black Thought served up a rare appearance by Eve alongside Busta Rhymes during a special J.Period Mixtape set.
