Watch Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers Perform Uplifting ‘The Way It Is’ With John Scofield, Christian McBride & Kenny Garrett

40

The Blue Note Jazz Festival ended last weekend in New York City with a special first-time collaboration held at Town Hall on Saturday, June 3. Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers were joined by jazz luminaries guitarist John Scofield, bassist Christian McBride and saxophonist Kenny Garrett for their Town Hall show.

Pianist Bruce Hornsby, multi-instrumentalist John Mailander, keyboardist J.T. Thomas, guitarist Gibb Droll, bassist J.V. Collier and drummer Chad Wright welcomed Scofield, McBride and Garrett at various points of Saturday’s concert. All three special guests were on stage with Hornsby & The Noisemakers for a swath of the evening, including “The Way It Is” finale.

Kenny Garrett took the spotlight with his soprano sax following the first chorus. McBride added fills on Upright Bass while Collier kept in the pocket. Scofield, sporting his trademark baseball cap, unleashed a fiery solo before the final verse of the title track off Bruce Hornsby & The Range’s debut 1986 album. Each solo, including Mailander’s stellar mandolin run, began with the ensemble bringing the song to near silence. Bruce engaged with Garrett, Scofield and Mailander in glorious call-and-response segments. Hornsby also played jazzy runs on the piano just before the band came back in to wrap the song.

Bruce Hornsby described the concert on his Instagram feed, writing:

This was an EPIC night. Christian McBride (@chrmcbride) with his unsurpassed rhythmic precision, DEEP groove, joie de vivre and knowledge, John Scofield (@oldmansco) with his unique angular melodicism, glorious flights of fancy and serious preparation work on my material, and Kenny Garrett (@kennygarrett_) with his with his beautiful tone, impeccable taste and mastery of his instrument(s), brought such powerful presences to the music and overall feeling on stage that elevated the proceedings in such a profound fashion. I think these collaborations will continue now and then, and the whole band looks forward to some future return engagements. Our guys were deep in it as well, and did fantastic jobs hanging with and supporting our guests. We will all remember this one.

Other highlights from Saturday’s show included a majestic “The End Of The Innocence” propelled by Garrett, a “Sneaking Up On Boo Radley” featuring excursions into Bill Evans’ “Twelve Tone Tune” and György Ligeti’s “L’escalier du Diable (The Devil’s Staircase)” as well as all three guests starring on “Long Tall Cool One” and “Meds.” Hornsby and Scofield connected on a stretch within “Meds” they worked into “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.” Additionally, McBride unleashed a rousing solo during “Spider Fingers” based on Bud Powell’s “Tempus Fugit.”
