Neil Young will head to Port Chester, NY’s The Capitol Theatre later this month (September 23rd, 24th) for a two-night run with a novel backing band, The Chrome Hearts [ticketing info].
The new dates at The Capitol Theatre, posted by the venue on Wednesday afternoon, come just a few hours after the announcement of Harvest Moon, a benefit event in Lake Hughes, CA at which Young is due to reunite with his former Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young bandmate Stephen Stills. The two most recently collaborated at Stills’ Light Up The Blues autism benefit concert in April 2023, at that time marking Young’s first ticketed performance in four years.
Both new announcements come less than three months after Young abruptly canceled his remaining summer tour dates with Crazy Horse. At the time, Young wrote “When a couple of us got sick after Detroit’s Pine Knob, we had to stop. We are still not fully recovered, so sadly our great tour will have a big unplanned break.”
In a recent Zoom video for Neil Young Archives subscribers, Young elaborated, “I was doing great and we were moving right along. Everybody’s loving the shows. Then I just woke up one morning on the bus and I said, ‘I can’t do this. I gotta stop.’ It was like I felt sick when I thought of going on stage. My body was telling me, ‘You gotta stop.’ So I listened to my body.”
“Crazy Horse will be back, God willing,” Neil added. “We did a good service to the name Crazy Horse [on the tour] and paid respect to what that was. But when it got to the point where we had done it, and now we were doing it again, that’s why I stopped. That can’t be controlled. You can’t tell when that’s going to happen. I’m sorry to all the people who bought tickets who couldn’t go, but I listened to my body.”
Of note, on the same Zoom call Young reportedly said he was planning a theater tour with Micah Nelson (Particle Kid)—who served in Crazy Horse on the 2024 tour while Nils Lofgren was on the road with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band—and the rhythm section from another one of his old backing bands, Promise of the Real (drummer Anthony LoGerfo and bassist Corey McCormick). A post about the two Port Chester shows on Neil Young Archives later in the afternoon appeared to confirm that Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts features himself, Nelson, LoGergo, and McCormick.
“We haven’t announced any shows yet, but they are mostly theaters that I played before, little theaters, and then I can play a little bit of acoustic, and then have the band come out and play,” he said on the aforementioned Zoom call ahead of the new announcements, per Brooklyn Vegan. “They’ll probably be on the East Coast and then going towards Michigan and then Ohio, and then a few other ones. They won’t be marathons. They won’t be two hours and 10 minutes of blasting rock & roll like it was with Crazy Horse.”
Neil Young is currently due to return to the stage on September 21st, two days before the shows at The Cap, for Farm Aid at Broadview Stage at SPAC in Saratoga Springs, NY.
