For the second time this year, Tedeschi Trucks Band arrived at New York’s Beacon Theatre to set up for a multiple-night stay. The 12-piece blues band visited its home away from home in late February/early March for a three-night stand, doubling up on trips to the Beacon this year after forgoing its annual residency in 2023 in favor of making its Madison Square Garden debut. With guest appearances by Trey Anastasio, Norah Jones, and Lukas Nelson at MSG, it was a worthy trade-off, but there’s still no replacing a TTB run at the Beacon.

For this second trip to NYC this year, Derek TrucksSusan Tedeschi, and their ace backing band will spread their love around the Big Apple with two nights at the Beacon and two nights in Brooklyn for the band’s debut at the Kings Theatre. As is the case with the band’s music, TTB has the utmost respect for traditions, but can’t help adding its own voice to time-honored legacies.

In that vein of translating traditions, Tedeschi Trucks Band loaded Tuesday’s NYC opener with tributes to blues greats Little Milton (by way of Chuck Willis’ “I Feel So Bad”), Muddy Waters (via Ann Cole’s “Got My Mojo Working”), and a Joe Cocker closer (The Coasters’ “Let’s Go Get Stoned”). Elsewhere, the band honored seminal songwriters like Bob Dylan with the group’s second-ever Gabe Dixon-led “Tangled Up in Blue” and Eric Clapton on Derek and the Dominos‘ “Keep On Growing”.

Of course, before the Beacon Theatre became synonymous with Tedeschi Trucks Band, it was hallowed ground for the Allman Brothers Band. Guitarist Derek Trucks performed at many of the band’s 238 straight sold-out performances at the Beacon, and on Tuesday he honored that legacy with ABB favorites “Statesboro Blues” and a climactic “Mountain Jam” which separated two halves of TTB’s own “Pasaquan” to finish off the second set.

Though the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s legacy is still in its infancy compared to that of the Allman Brothers, the group continues to build its own unique history show by thrilling show and album by brilliant album. Thirteen years after making its Beacon Theatre debut, TTB already has the third-most shows at the Manhattan venue (57) behind the Allman Brothers and Steely Dan with 67. The silver medal is certainly within reach for the group, but rather than chasing that accolade which will assuredly arrive barring some unforeseen circumstance, Tedeschi Trucks Band chooses to continue breaking new ground—whether that be with an ambitious four-part album or playing a new venue even when your favorite haunt is just a subway ride away.
