Arlo McKinley on Friday shared “I Don’t Mind”, the fourth and final single from his upcoming LP, This Mess We’re In. The Cincinnati, OH-born singer-songwriter’s follow-up to his acclaimed 2020 breakthrough, Die Midwestern, is out on July 15th via Oh Boy Records.
The unforgiving daylight encroaches on a debaucherous late night on “I Don’t Mind”, as McKinley forces us to grapple with the consequences of our excesses. Even in this shameful hue, Arlo is there to say “I don’t mind.” Whether that apathy comes from a desire to forgive or just from being beleaguered by so many disappointments and heartbreaks lies in the eye of the beholder.
Alongside McKinley on his third album is a crack team of instrumentalists including drummer Ken Coomer (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo), pianist Rick Steff (Lucero, Cat Power), guitar and mellotron courtesy of album producer Matt Ross-Spang (Margo Price, Jason Isbell), guitarist Will Sexton, fiddler Jessie Munson, and more. Together, these artists help to fully flesh out the inherent power in McKinley’s music, fanning the spark that Oh Boy founder John Prine saw when he signed Arlo shortly before his death in 2020.
