Bill Wyman, former bassist for The Rolling Stones, has reportedly contributed to the band’s forthcoming album, as per The Sun, their first studio effort of new origianl music since 2005’s A Bigger Bang. Wyman apparently reunited with his Stones bandmates as the album honors drummer Charlie Watts, who sadly died on August 24, 2021.
Bill Wyman played bass with The Stones from 1962 until 1993 and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame with the band in 1989. Wyman’s final tour with The Rolling Stones came in 1990-91, the Steel Wheels Tour, after which Darryl Jones stepped into a touring/recording bassist role.
Wyman reunited with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts in 2012 — along with fellow former Rolling Stone guitarist Mick Taylor — as the legendary rockers celebrated their 50th anniversary. He played on two songs, “It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll” and “Honky Tonk Women,” at a concert in London on November 25, 2012. But that was the extent of his participation in The Stones’ 50th anniversary celebration.
Since leaving The Rolling Stones in 1993, Wyman has maintained he is content with his life outside the band. Bill and Charlie Watts were always close and a source for The Sun reported that the 86-year-old was returning to The Stones to help record their new album, which not only honors Charlie but features some of his previously recorded drumming.
“Bill hasn’t seen the band together for years, but always loved Charlie,” the source said. “This record’s really a tribute to Charlie, so he couldn’t say no.”
At an invitation from Mick Jagger, the Sun also reported, Wyman plays on one track from the album — which also features guest spots from Paul McCartney and Elton John.
