Grammy-winning artist Maren Morris joined forces with fellow singer-songwriters Mickey Guyton and Brittney Spencer for a powerful performance of “The Tree” on last night’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The song is one of two featured on Morris’ recently-released The Bridge EP.

The Bridge arrived on September 15, 2023 and marks Morris’ first release on Columbia Records proper after putting out previous major label collections via Columbia Nashville. Morris explained the decision while sitting for an interview with Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon.

“I wrote these two songs ‘The Tree’ and ‘Get The Hell Out Of Here’ and I just felt like I was leaving some things in country music behind that didn’t really, like, serve me anymore,” Morris told Fallon of the EP. “And so, it felt like calling it ‘The Bridge’ felt like just the step to the next thing, whatever that is.”

When Jimmy Fallon pressed Maren Morris on whether country music was in her past, the 33-year-old musician said it wasn’t possible. “I don’t think it’s something you can really leave, because it’s the music that’s in me and that’s what I grew up doing, it’s the music I write, even if I’ve been sort of genre fluid my whole career,” Morris explained. “You can’t, like, scrub the country music out.” The Texas native also reflected on her friendship with Taylor Swift during the interview.

Acclaimed producer Greg Kurstin was behind the board for “The Tree,” while in-demand producer Jack Antonoff handled those duties on “Get The Hell Out Of Here.” Morris’ “The Tree” finds her singing about hope and self assurance. Guyton and Spencer amplified the message on Fallon.
