Carl Horning, co-owner of the popular Oregon concert and wedding venue Horning’s Hideout (the longtime home of Northwest String Summit), was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds when police were summoned to the property on the morning of Tuesday, January 2nd.

The 47-year-old’s brother Robert Horning, 63, who is also a part owner of the venue along with their mother Jane Horning, was detained at the scene and released from custody several hours later. He remains a person of interest according to police investigators.

Local news outlets reported that the brothers were involved in a legal battle after Carl and his sister LaDonna Elliot filed a petition asking a judge to appoint a conservator for their mother to help manage the 160-acre property, which is valued at $1.7 million. According to court documents, 83-year-old Jane Horning displayed “evidence of age-related cognitive decline,” including memory issues, leading to disagreement among her six children as to how to care for her.

The petition further alleged she is “susceptible to coercion” and has been the victim of elder abuse, describing her as “at the center of tug-of-war in which one son asks her to sign legal documents, which she does, and then another son asks her to void them, which she does, and then back and forth.” A Washington County judge approved the appointment of a conservator last year but has yet to rule on other issues in the case, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB).

In addition to being an owner of Horning’s Hideout, Carl Horning was a lieutenant with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue (TVF&R) after being promoted in 2023. A spokesperson for the agency said they are deeply saddened by his death and are supporting the family during their grieving process. TVF&R flags were flown at half-staff in his honor the day after his death.

Police are still investigating the shooting. No charges have been filed against Robert Horning at this time.

This is a developing story.
