It’s official. The Presets are BACK with an absolute fkn CHOON.
Their first new track in four long years is dubbed ‘Do What You Want’ and it’s a sinister dancefloor jam the lads have described as ‘pub rock techno’.
“We struggled with this track for a couple of years do get it right – there’s 60 other versions,” the electronic duo tells triple J. “We wanted to make a techno version of an Aussie pub rock song, like the Angels or something”.
The four-to-the-floor earworm — which was written and produced by the group themselves — also comes packing an all-star roster of performers including Kirin J Callinan and DZ Deathrays’ Shane Parsonson on guitars, Touch Sensitive on bass, and they even managed to pinch Cold Chisel’s horn section for good measure.
Speaking with the J’s, Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes explained that they were still “in the middle” of making their “berserk” fourth studio album, the follow-up to 2012’s Pacifica, which they’ve previously described as “the best they’ve ever made”.
“For the first year and a half [of making the new album] we were just making sad, melancholy, moody music, which was the exact opposite of what we wanted to do…” The dudes recall of the writing process so far. “I think we just enjoy partying and jumping around, dancing, having a good time. We want to make music that feels like that.”
While we wait for their new LP to arrive (ETA some time next year, FYI) you can get your ears on new certified banger ‘Do What You Want’ below, or catch them performing at a crapload of festivals across the country this summer including Newcastle’s This That this weekend and Beyond the Valley after that.
