Watch Edgar Winter Group Deliver Wild ‘Frankenstein’ On ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’ In 1973

100

Edgar Winter is the ultimate utility player of rock. The Edgar Winter Group frontman can lay it down on keys, saxophone and percussion, making him a true triple threat. Today marks Winter’s 76th birthday as he was born on this date in Beaumont, Texas back in 1946. To check out his vast skills on each instrument, look no further than a live performance of the group’s big hit, “Frankenstein,” from British music television show The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1973.

Winter starts on synth keytar for the band’s epic nine-minute take on “Frankenstein,” but quickly picks up a sax and delivers an exceptional solo before moving over to percussion for a call-and-response segment with the drummer. From there, it’s back to keytar, on which he uses a base module to eek out all sorts of spacey sounds. Edgar returns to percussion for the big finish.
