For a fish lover like me, Friday was a dream come true. Bagel lox for breakfast. Salmon sushi rolls for lunch. Pan-seared salmon for dinner. And for dessert? Two sets of Leftover Salmon at Saint Rocke in Redondo Beach. The sextet from Boulder, Colorado transformed the seaside bar-restaurant-club into an old-fashioned hoedown with their peculiar brand of what they call “Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass” and plenty of personality to match.

There was Vince Herman, strumming his acoustic guitar like a jolly gray whale. And Drew Emmitt, wielding his mandolin to whip up waves among a crunchy crowd. And Erik Deutsche, off to the side catching ivories of all kinds, from his keyboard to his melodica. And Greg Garrison taking his standup bass for a swim while Alwyn Robinson kept the beat tight and crisp as an ocean spray on drums.

But the tastiest bites came courtesy of Andy Thorn, known to this particular crowd as Tiffany. He wailed on banjo like he thought he was alone now, flitting his eyelids with every plutonic pluck of his strings. From “Steam-Powered Airplane” to “Jokester” and beyond, Thorn set the tone and pace throughout the evening, a mountain man meeting his maker at the shore. When the band jammed into its renditions of Janis Joplin’s “Take Another Little Piece of My Heart” and Social Distortion’s “Story of My Life,” he revealed, if not a vivacious voice, certainly one worthy of peeking out from behind his instrument of choice.

You needn’t be a pescatarian to enjoy Leftover Salmon. An ear (or two) for an eclectic blend of bluegrass, jazz, funk and soul—and, perhaps, enough feet and hips to boogie accordingly—should suffice.
