The musical mad scientist that is Keller Williams is hitting the road next week, for a string of dates through March and April that will see him go from the northeast to out west, down south and back around.
Probably more than anybody else on the scene today, Keller is the man known for his seemingly infinite trove of artistic creativity, with a slew of different bands that he has started and developed, recorded albums with and fronted and toured with, at both intimate clubs and many of the biggest jam festivals around. From soul with More Than a Little, to groove rock with the WMDs and The Kwahtro, to all his bluegrass cover projects with The McCourys, The Keels, and most recently, PettyGrass—a string band tribute to the late, legendary Tom Petty, with help from progressive bluegrass quintet The Hillbenders.
Find Keller’s various versions of “You Don’t Know How It Feels” on the internet to clue yourself in as to how exciting that new project should prove to be!
This coming tour, for the most part, will feature Keller doing his solo act, something that he has proven time and again can be just as enigmatic and exciting to see live as any of his group projects, if not more. When he’s doing his thing on stage, there’s no telling what musical tricks might happen, and it could be anything from the outright whimsical to the unexpectedly moving—spontaneous, profound lyrics thought up on the spot, new dance moves, and intricate ways to use the many different instruments he employs toward crafting his undeniably unique sound: acoustic dance music.
This writer in particular holds various Keller shows as some of the most entertaining nights of music he has ever attended. He remembers in particular a show at Jonathan Edwards Winery in Connecticut a few years back, where Keller played to a crowd of people that were clearly for the most part a new audience, but after brilliant, emphatic versions of songs like “Naive Melody,” “Freeker By The Speaker,” “Above The Thunder” and more, the room that was previously unacquainted with the self-described bluegrass ninja of funk had turned into a dancing circus of love and enthusiasm.
Bottom line: he’s an artist to get yourself acquainted with if that’s not the case already.
Keller will be kicking off his run of dates with a show next Thursday on March 1 at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City, NJ. Following that, he will only be in the northeast for two more nights, with follow up shows at Homer, NY’s Center For The Arts and Burlington VT’s Higher Ground. From there he will head out west for several dates in Colorado, Oregon and Washington, before heading down south for several shows in Florida in the end of March and beginning of May. Beyond that lies more northeast dates, and festy season!
