Beck brought his Colors tour to the Pinewood Bowl Amphitheater in Lincoln, Nebraska on Wednesday night. Joining the slacker-rock icon as the opening act on the bill was Julian Casablancas’ 1980s-tinged side-project The Voidz. The two acts teamed up during Beck’s encore on a classic New Wave hit.
The collaboration came towards the end of the night’s finale as Beck and his backing band worked their way through their typical mashup medley/musician introductions. The extended encore featured bits and pieces of songs from The Beatles, Earth Wind & Fire, Michael Jackson and Phil Collins mixed with takes on Talking Heads’ “Once In A Lifetime,” New Order’s “Blue Monday” all within Beck’s “Where It’s At.” Towards the back end of the multi-song stanza, Casablancas and Voidz guitarist Jeramy “Beardo” Gritter emerged. The augmented ensemble performed a take on The Human League’s sing-along anthem “Don’t You Want Me,” with Beck and Casablancas sharing vocal duties.
