Bob Weir Debuts New Project & Guests With Herbie Hancock And Grace Potter At Sound Summit

170

The fourth annual Sound Summit was held in the Bay Area on Saturday at the Mountain Theater atop Mount Tamalpais. Guitarist Bob Weir performed a set early in the day and then sat-in with Grace Potter and Herbie Hancock.

Weir’s performance was billed as “Bobby & The Chew Toys” featuring the RatDog rhythm section of bassist Robin Sylvester and drummer Jay Lane. The Grateful Dead guitarist started off solo with a cover of Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and the Hunter/Garcia gem “Loose Lucy.” Bobby then brought out Sylvester for a rendition of Little Feat’s “Easy To Slip” and as per Deadheadland’s report noted Jay Lane was late and stuck in traffic. Weir and Sylvester went on to play “Peggy-O” and “Only A River” before Lane arrived in time to add to the “Not Fade Away” finale.

Bobby had previously teamed with Grace Potter for performances of “Friend Of The Devil” a number of times in the past including at 2015’s Dear Jerry tribute concert. The pair reprised their “FOTD” collaboration at Sound Summit on Saturday during Grace’s set. Weir also emerged as part of jazz legend Herbie Hancock’s headlining performance for a jam on “Chameleon.”
