Eddie Vedder Welcomes Liz Phair, Johnny Marr & More At Ohana

147

The third annual Ohana Festival hit its midway point on Saturday at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, California. Yesterday’s lineup featured appearances from the likes of Yeah Yeah Yeah, Liz Phair, Johnny Marr and Bahamas with Eddie Vedder tapped to headline. The Pearl Jam frontman delivered a 23-song acoustic set that mixed material from his full-time band, his solo records and a healthy dose of covers. Vedder also welcomed a number of special guests throughout which included Phair, Marr and Scott Thurston of The Heartbreakers

Vedder focussed the first third of the night primarily on Pearl Jam tunes while also offering covers of Warren Zevon’s “Keep Me In Your Heart” and Cat Power’s “Good Woman.” The first surprise of the evening saw Vedder teaming up with Phair on “Better Man.” Phair handled the vocals for the majority of the Vitalogy track with Vedder delivering the song’s first verse and singing harmony throughout. After delving into selections from Ukuele Songs and the Into The Wild soundtrack Vedder welcomed out Thurston for a trio of Tom Petty covers.

The duo offered “Wildflowers,” which Vedder debuted back in March in Brazil. Next, the pair gave “Room At The Top” its concert debut. Vedder had previously played the song from the soundtrack to the movie She’s The One earlier this year at the Academy Awards. Finally, Vedder and Thurston served up “I Won’t Back” to close out the mini Petty tribute. George Harrison’s “Isn’t It A Pity,” The Clash’s “Should I Stay Or Should I Go?” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Open All Night” from The Boss’ 1982 release Nebraska came ahead of the final two surprises of the night.

Marr took to the stage next returning a favor from earlier in the day when Vedder sat in during his set for a take on The Smiths’ “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.” This time around they teamed up on “Hard Sun.” Vedder’s headlining set came to a close as the still filled with members of Mumford & Sons, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and more for a singalong version of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World.”
