Gov’t Mule Welcomes Doug Woolverton & Jimmy Vivino In Los Angeles

Gov’t Mule shows in Los Angeles are typically guest filled affairs and last night’s concert at The Wiltern was no exception. The band brought out trumpeter Doug Woolverton and guitarist Jimmy Vivino at separate points of Tuesday night’s show.

The quartet went the all-original route for their first set at The Wiltern. Guitarist Warren Haynes & Co. opened the evening with fan-favorite “Bad Little Doggie.” More staples laid ahead including “Broke Down On The Brazos,” “Rocking Horse” and “Time To Confess.” Gov’t Mule played three songs from Revolution Come … Revolution Go, their most recent album, in L.A. and each appeared as part of the first set.

Mule came out swinging for a second set that began with a run of “Slackjaw Jezebel,” “Mr. High & Mighty” and “Steppin’ Lightly.” Haynes then led the group through a cover of Memphis Slim’s “Mother Earth.” Next, the jam stalwarts paid tribute to longtime Los Angeles resident Tom Petty by fitting “Breakdown” within their own “Beautifully Broken.” From there, the four-piece band lit into The J.B.’s “Doing It To Death.” Ace trumpeter Doug Woolverton emerged during the song to add a solo.

Last night’s second set ended with yet another cover, as Gov’t Mule performed the Al Green classic “I’m A Ram.” When the band emerged for the encore they were joined by frequent collaborator Jimmy Vivino. The leader of the Conan house band contributed to Mule’s rendition of “I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home.” Warren Haynes threw some lyrics from Billy Preston’s “Will It Go Round In Circles” within the Ann Peebles cover.
