Lil Peep & XXXTentacion’s Posthumous Collab Drops, Despite Disapproval From Peep’s Camp

234

A posthumous collaboration between late rappers Lil Peep and XXXTentacion has been shared online, much to the chagrin of Peep’s friends, family and fans.

The rappers never worked together during their time on this planet, but have been brought together on a new song dubbed ‘Falling Down’, by songwriter iLoveMakonnen.

A friend of Peep’s, Makonnen co-wrote the track with the rapper prior to his death. Months later, after Peep passed away of a Fentanyl-Xanax overdose, Makonnen claims to have shown it to XXX, who was inspired to pen a few verses of his own.

After recording the new parts, XXXTentacion was then shot and killed in South Florida, passing away seven months after Peep (four suspects have now been indicted in relation to his murder).

But news of their posthumous musical collab has angered Peep’s camp, with his fellow GothBoiClique member Fish Narc slamming the song on Instagram and arguing that Peep would never have approved.

“[Peep] explicitly rejected XXX for his abuse of women, spent time and money getting XXX’s songs removed from his Spotify playlists, and wouldn’t have co-signed that song. Don’t listen to it,” he told fans.

“This shit is people trying to make money off him. He never would have signed up for that, he did not like XXXTentacion.”

Peep’s mum Liza Womack has also voiced her disapproval on Instagram, responding to a fan who asked her why the collab was allowed to be released by saying “It was Makonnen’s choice”.

As Variety reports, Peep’s label Columbia Records has acquired the rights to his unreleased material, which has caused many of Peep’s friends to blame them on social media for the existence of this uncomfortable version of ‘Falling Down’.

A moderator of the Goth Boi Clique subreddit called for fans to boycott the song shortly after it was announced, writing, “Out of respect to Peep/GBC and in defiance of Columbia Records we’ve decided that it is simply inappropriate and unethical for us to allow posting of the coming release and support of this song.”

To give you a bit more context, Peep was openly bisexual, whereas XXX was someone who was supposedly unapologetic about almost beating his gay prison cellmate to death.

In an Instagram video released prior to the song, Makonnen shared audio of XXX talking about Peep.

“If I would have known he was so cool, I would’ve fucked with him sooner,” the rapper said.

“It’s unfortunate because it’s like, yo, when people die, that’s when you — ya know — because the remorse kind of makes you check them out. It was like if would’ve watched interviews sooner, bro, we were so alike. And it kinda bothers me.”

You can listen to that audio, alongside Peep and X’s posthumous collab on Makonnen’s ‘Falling Down’, below.
