Jon Fishman: Phish drummer, local politician and, now, faculty member. According to a new report in Maine local paper The Republican Journal, Fishman will join the teaching staff at the Bay Chamber Music School in Rockport, ME.
As the report notes,
Drummer Jon Fishman, of the internationally renowned band Phish, has joined the faculty roster this fall. Fishman had a passion for the drums from an early age and emulated John Bonham, drummer for Led Zeppelin; Bill Bruford of Yes; and Keith Moon of The Who. Shortly after arriving at the University of Vermont to study engineering, he met Mike Gordon and Trey Anastasio and founded Phish. Fishman moved to Maine in 2006; last year, he was voted a Lincolnville selectman. He brings a vast knowledge of playing the drums to all ages and abilities at Bay Chamber.
This new announcement is the latest in a multiple year-long trend of Fishman immersing himself in the local community and politics of his adopted home state. After campaigning extensively for Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders ahead of the 2016 Presidential election, Fishman successfully ran for local political office in Lincolnville, ME. Fishman and his wife, Briar Fishman—who also holds a position on the local Board of Education—also renovated and reopened the town’s general store. At the store’s grand opening late last year, Fishman jammed with local outfit The Mallett Brothers, and had so much fun doing it that he joined them for a string of tour dates in 2018. Fishman has also appeared in a number of Maine-centric TV spots in recent months, including starring in an episode of Maine Cabin Masters and serving as a guest on local talk show The Nite Show with Danny Cashman.
Jon Fishman is preparing to head out on the road with Phish for their 2018 fall tour, a 14-date run set to stop in Albany, NY; Hampton, VA; Nashville, TN; and Chicago, IL before culminating in a four-night Halloween run at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
