PREMIERE: Analog Son Releases Funky, In-The-Pocket New Single, “CTI”, Off Upcoming Studio Album

152

Analog Son is a fan-favorite funk act out of Colorado led by guitarist Jordan Linit and bassist Josh Fairman. On September 28th, the high-energy eight-piece will release their fourth full-length studio album, Funky Mother, on Color Red, the new label and content platform founded by The New Mastersounds’ Eddie Roberts. Also produced by Roberts, Funky Mother was recorded and engineered at Scanhope Sound, a Denver-area studio owned by Analog Son bassist and co-leader Josh Fairman.

Analog Son has always been a progressive, forward-thinking funk act, offering up dynamic compositions, captivating live shows, and a tight, dialed-in sound. In the past, the band has used a Steely Dan-esque approach to recording albums, with Linit and Fairman calling on a rotating cast of musicians to join them in the studio. Past collaborators range from Ivan Neville to String Cheese Incident’s Jason Hann.

However, for Funky Mother, Analog Son switched up their approach, solidifying a recording lineup featuring Devon Parker and Ashley Niven (vocals), Eric Luba (keyboards), George Horn (drums), Will Trask (percussion), Mike Chiesa (tenor saxophone), and Gabe Mervine (trumpet). Despite this, Analog Son’s new album still highlights a number of special guest artists, with members of Thievery CorporationKneebodyThe Motet, and Michal Menert & The Pretty Fantastics all represented.

As Jordan Linit explained in a statement, “Utilizing our core group of musicians in the studio, we’ve been able to incorporate live intricacies into the composition and showcase everyone’s character who’s in the core band. Their musical personalities are starting to come through in the studio and reflect what people have come to expect in the live show.”

Added Josh Fairman, “This record has a more refined sound. We’ve been playing together for long enough now where we’ve developed more of a unique sound—as opposed to just being funky, it actually sounds like our band.”

Today, Live For Live Music is proud to premiere the second single off Analog Son’s forthcoming new album, a track titled “CTI”. “CTI” is a feast for the ears for music lovers. The song showcases Analog Son’s easy, in-the-pocket grooves and rich, complex melodies, and features propulsive horn lines and a standout solo crafted by Gabe Mervine, former trumpeter for The Motet. The song pays tribute to the legendary jazz label by the same name, CTI Records, whose roster included a number of jazz greats who blurred the lines between traditional jazz and other popular music, such as George BensonFreddie HubbardStanley Turrentine, Ron Carter, and others. Gaining its name after producer Eddie Roberts noted that the tune had “a kind of CTI vibe,” the song shows Analog Son in peak form.

Noted Josh Fairman,

“CTI” was really fun track. We wrote it in the studio and laid it down the whole time thinking, “this sounds classic.” At some point, Eddie is like, “This sounds like CTI” and the name stuck. It’s an honor for us to pay this kind of homage, as the artists on the CTI label were some of the best musicians around. They helped create the road Analog Son travels every time we get to together and play. This track is a reflection of their influence on us directly and indirectly.
