Primus and Mastadon worlds collided again last night, as Les Claypool and company invited up Mastadon guitarist, Brent Hinds, to jam on a second guitar during the evening’s encore, “Southbound Pachyderm”. Primus and Mastadon are no strangers to each other, having embarked on a recent extensive summer tour together.
Amidst their recent summer tour, Les Claypool issued a statement from the road saying that Primus will take a break from touring,
This will be the last Primus run for a bit as we will need to cool-out for awhile, recharge and work on our nunchaku skills,” explained Claypool. “So, if you want to get your Goblin Rock fix, now is the time to do so as it will be the last time to witness the glory of the Desaturating Seven production. See y’all on the highway…
Primus is currently on the road for their final tour for the foreseeable future, and last night’s Athens, GA show at the Georgia Theatre was a barn burner. The night’s first segment saw Primus dig deep into older material, including “Too Many Puppies”, “Sgt. Baker”, “Pudding Time”, and “Winona’s Big Brown Beaver”. Primus then delighted the intimate theater with a complete performance of their most recent studio effort, The Devastating Seven. The trio closed the show by offering up a three-song selection of “Welcome To This World”, “My Name Is Mud”, and “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver”, bringing the Tuesday night party to a close.
Following a brief chance to catch their breaths, Primus came back out for their encore with “Southbound Pachyderm”, off of 1995’s Tales From The Punchbowl. Midway through the song headed in improvisational jam territory, Claypool invited Mastadon guitarist Brent Hinds onstage, introducing him as “Captain Jack Sparrow, as the rockstar donned a pirate hat. The jam got heavy and deep with the addition of Hinds, as a psychedelic, rainbow light show blasted off behind the four musicians.
