Today marks 10 years since the death of Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright at the age of 65. Wright’s vast array of pianos, keyboards and organs created kaleidoscopic textures which were a key ingredient to Pink Floyd’s progressively psychedelic output. This week’s edition of Saturday Stream presents a Spotify Playlist of Wright’s essential work with the legendary group as well as some of his contributions to solo projects by two of his Pink Floyd band mates.
In addition to keyboards, Wright added vocals to many of Pink Floyd’s best-known songs and occasionally sang lead, such as on “Time” and “Wearing The Inside Out.” Wright also wrote or co-wrote many of Floyd’s classics, including “The Great Gig in the Sky,” “Us and Them,” “Remember a Day,” “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” and others that are featured in the playlist.
Wright also co-produced and performed on his late Pink Floyd band mate Syd Barrett’s 1970 solo record Barrett. He later appeared on Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour’s 2006 album On An Island and toured alongside his former band mate in support of the LP.
