John Oates of Hall & Oates stopped by Mill Valley, CA’s Sweetwater Music Hall Thursday night, mixing up the setlist with original tunes and beloved covers. The evening also saw a pair of guests, as Jason Crosby and Sweetwater owner, Bob Weir, lent Oates a helping hand on fiddle and guitar.
Oates and Weir are no strangers to each other, as Hall & Oates teamed with the Grateful Dead in 1988 for a rainforest benefit concert at Madison Square Garden. In more recent times, Oates played a show at Sweetwater Music Hall in 2015, with Weir and Crosby also sitting in during the iconic rockstars debut performance at Sweetwater.
Oates invited Crosby up for a take on “Arkansas”, the title track off his most recent album, before moving through “All I Am” and “Lose It In Louisiana”. As Crosby walked off the stage, Weir emerged, helping Oates with a pair of Grateful Dead tunes, “Friend Of The Devil” and “West L.A. Fadeaway”. The duo then went into a cover of The Temptations’ “Shakey Ground”, with Weir sounding confident and comfortable in his hometown venue.
