Bob Weir & Wolf Bros Begin Tour In Reno

Bob Weir and Wolf Bros began their first-ever tour Tuesday night with a performance at Grand Sierra Resort & Casino in Reno. The trio of Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir along with drummer Jay Lane and upright bassist Don Was had recently previewed the performance that once again mixed Dead favorites with selections by RatDog, Bob Dylan and more during the two set show.

Weir tapped the Grateful Dead classic “Jack Straw” to begin the band’s first night of tour. Bobby then led takes on his “Cassidy” and John Phillips’ Dead staple “Me And My Uncle.” Weir went acoustic for “Only A River,” a tune from his solo album Blue Mountain, and stayed acoustic as they moved to Dylan’s “She Belongs To Me” but switched to electric mid-song.

The RatDog original “Ashes And Glass” started with Bobby playing acoustic and he switched back to electric as Lane and Was started the foundation of what became “Don’t Let Go.” Bobby remained on electric as the trio transitioned back to “Ashes And Glass” to close out the set. Weir’s wife then came on stage to present him with a cake while Was led a rendition of “Happy Birthday To You” for Bobby who was celebrating his 71st birthday.

The second set opened with the traditional “Peggy-O” and Kris Kristofferson’s “Me & Bobby McGee” before taking off with the Dead’s beloved “Birdsong.” Weir continued to swap between electric and acoustic throughout the set. The latter-day Dead original “Corrina” kept the second half progressing as the trio rolled through a funky “The Music Never Stopped” and Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” before closing out with the Grateful Dead’s standard couplet “China Cat Sunflower” into “I Know You Rider.” The trio returned to encore with the inspiring “Touch Of Grey” as opening night drew to a close.
