Happy Birthday Tom Petty: Covers Spotify Playlist

138

Tom Petty was born on this date in 1950 in Gainesville, Florida. The beloved rocker was just 66 when he tragically died in October 2017. As the leader of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and a solo artist, Petty conceived of some of the greatest songs ever written in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. Many of those songs are featured in this week’s Saturday Stream Spotify Playlist featuring covers of Petty’s memorable compositions.

Petty’s songs have been interpreted for many years, both before and after his untimely passing. Earlier this week, Blackberry Smoke and Amanda Shires shared their collaborative take on “You Got Lucky” and The Lumineers issued their version of “Walls” earlier this month on the anniversary of his death.

The Spotify Playlist below features a variety of artists from across a wide range of musical genres and backgrounds. There are multiple iterations of such all-time classics like “American Girl,” “Free Fallin,’” “I Won’t Back Down,” “Learning To Fly” and “Wildflowers” alongside singular offerings of fellow favorites like “Refugee,” “The Waiting,” “Runnin’ Down A Dream” and deeper cuts like “It’ll All Work Out” and “Rebels.”

The collection showcases covers by Johnny Cash, John Mayer, Stevie Nicks, Melissa Etheridge, Kris Kristofferson, Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, Glen Campbell, Keller Williams & The Keels, The Infamous Stringdusters, Trampled By Turtles, Linda Ronstadt, Drive-By Truckers, Rosanne Cash, Devon Allman, Phoebe Bridgers and others.
