Joe Russo’s Almost Dead most recent Taper Tuesday release features a soundboard recording of their July 14th, 2018 show at The Depot in Salt Lake City, UT. With Marco Benevento absent from the festivities, Brooklyn-based keyboardist Erik Deutsch of Leftover Salmon took over on the ivories and did a more-than-commendable job in place of the mad scientist.
Highlights from the evening include a beautiful solo from Deutsch during a 25-minute combination of “Dancing In The Streets” into “Eyes Of The World” that witnessed the keyboardist and Russo play off one another gracefully. The first set never let up with one continuous flow from “Eyes” into “He’s Gone”, which led into a set-closing, triumphant “The Other One”.
In set two, an epic “Born Cross-Eyed” jam served as the meat in a “Truckin’” sandwich that clocked in at the 15-minute mark. “Playing In The Band” into “’73 Changes (Eyes) Jam” back into “Playing in the Band Reprise” brought the set to a proper close after a near-perfect 20 minutes of sheer splendor. Tom Hamilton began the encore with a solo before being joined by Deutsch, which followed with the rest of his Almost Dead cohorts joining in for an encore of “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad” ahead of a serene instrumental version of “We Bid You Goodnight.”
