Baltimore-based jam quartet Pigeons Playing Ping Pong returned to San Francisco on Saturday night for a performance at The Regency Ballroom. The band was joined by two Bay Area veteran musicians as Lebo (Dan Lebowitz) of ALO and Hot Buttered Rum’s Nat Keefe sat-in at separate points of the evening.
PPPP opened with a run of “Upfunk,” “Somethin’ For Ya” and “Porcupine” before bringing out Lebo. The guitarist/vocalist, who sat-in with Pigeons at High Sierra this summer, teamed with the group for a version of “Julia” that featured the Pigeons’ debut of ALO staple “Plastic Bubble” within. Saturday night’s second set included the recently debuted “Overrun,” the Greg Ormont-penned “Say Cheese” in the middle of Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer,” Keefe lending a hand on “Fortress” and more. The concert came to a close with a throwback to Pigeons’ DisNYE concert, as they worked “Tale As Old As Time” from Beauty & The Beast into their own “Zydeko.” Watch a clip of “Plastic Bubble” captured by Jason Rappaport:
