On Friday night, Tedeschi Trucks Band kicked off the final weekend of their ongoing six-night Beacon Theatre residency, which finishes in full tonight, Saturday, October 13th. While the mid-week shows have seen more traditional sets from the band’s 12-piece lineup, the weekend shows have set a trend of inviting special guests to join them onstage. Following last weekend’s sit-ins from Jimmy Herring and Doyle Bramhall II for the run’s opening night, Tedeschi Trucks Band similarly had a special guest planned for their Friday night showing, with saxophonist Ravi Coltrane joining the band to close out the first set and encore.

Marketed as an “Evening With” show, meaning that the band offered up two sets without an opener, Tedeschi Trucks Band performed a particularly cover-heavy first set, opened with Betty Harris’ soulful “Break In The Road”. After original number “Laugh About It”, the group then dug into The Beatles’ catalog, performing Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’s “Within You Without You”, marking its first play in around a year. From there, after a string of three originals—”Just as Strange”, “All the World”, and “Anyhow”—the group then performed Four Tops’ “Loving You (Has Made My Life Sweeter Than Ever)”.

After this fiery start to the set, Tedeschi Trucks Band invited saxophonist Ravi Coltrane out to the stage. The son of famed jazz musicians John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane, Ravi first emerged for a rendition of TTB original “Midnight In Harlem” before Ravi and company offered up a track from one of his father’s jazz contemporaries, Miles Davis, with a rendition of “Ali”. To close out Ravi Coltrane’s first sit-in of the evening, Tedeschi Trucks Band then performed a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Down In The Flood” to end the first set on a high note.

After set break, Tedeschi Trucks Band returned sans Ravi, again opening the set with a cover: this time of George Jones’ “Color Of The Blues”. Similar to frame one, the group produced a mix of original and cover tunes, though many of the covers came toward the end of the set. After “Bound For Glory”, which came squarely in the middle of the second set, the group laid out a string of covers, including Derek & The Dominos’ “Keep On Growing”, Freddie King’s “Have You Ever Loved A Woman”, and Howlin’ Wolf’s “I’ve Been Abused”. As a highlight to end the set, the group segued from their own “The Storm”, off 2013’s Made Up My Mind into Allman Brothers Band’s fan-favorite classic tune “Whipping Post”.

To close out the show in full, Ravi Coltrane once again appeared during the final song of the encore. Tedeschi Trucks Band first performed their cover of Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How It Feels”, followed up by a song initially from Derek Trucks’ own solo career, “Get What You Deserve”. From there, Ravi appeared for a final rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Let’s Go Get Stoned”.
