The Avett Brothers closed out a three-night stand at The Capitol Theatre, in what now has become an annual tradition on Saturday night. The North Carolina-based act first played the historic rock palace back in 2016, a night after their highest profile show to date: a headlining gig at Madison Square Garden. Last year, the band returned to The Cap upping the ante with a trio of sold-out shows. The multi-night run gave them an opportunity to get comfortable and dig into their catalog delivering a total of 82 unique songs – repeating just four.

The Americana act returned to the 1,800-capacity venue this past weekend where they once again mined their songbook showcasing 70+ tunes, with just a handful played more than once. Saturday night, The Avetts put an emphatic exclamation point on their 2018 residency with a marathon 29-song show. Like Friday, the band was joined by Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show on fiddle for the majority of the evening. The finale showcased all sides of what this band does best as they put their modern touch on traditional folk and string band music highlighted by Seth and Scott Avett’s heartfelt songs about love, lose, temptation and redemption.

A bluegrass version of “True Sadness,” the title track from their ninth studio album was tapped to open things up. The band would lean heavily on the 2016 release delivering seven tracks from the record over the course of the next two and a half hours. The early part of the show focused on their more traditional sounding material with standout takes on “Rejects in the Attic” and “Distraction #74.” They would double-down on that theme as the stage was turned over to Scott, Ketch and bassist Bob Crawford as they expertly delivered the pairing of two old-time fiddle songs that stretch back over a hundred years with “Soldier’s Joy” and “Rock That Cradle Lucy.”

A tender moment followed as Seth, Scott and Bob teamed up on a gorgeous version of “I Wish I Was,” a song whose origin was prominently featured in Judd Apatow’s 2017 documentary May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers. The democratic feel of the set continued next as Crawford took center stage to sing “Letter To A Pretty Girl.” It was just the 12th time the rarity about life on the road wrapped in a love song from 2004’s Mignonette has been played. The Avetts used the midway portion of the night to preview a trio of new songs with “Trouble Letting Go,” a bouncy, folk-rock song, “Orion’s Belt” an instantly likable country-rocker and “Roses And Sacrifice,” a bluegrass-tinged number.

The last third of the night saw Joe Kwon get his chance to step into the spotlight teaming with Scott on “Froggie Went A-Courtin’.” The cellist added to the folk classic song’s long history of interpretations by singing it in Korean. A string of introspective and reflective tunes helped close things out with “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise,” with its line “and your life doesn’t change by the man that’s elected” getting a resounding response. The Avett Brothers brought the run to an end with a three-song encore and ended things the same way they did in 2017 with a take on “Life” from their 2012 release The Carpenter.
