The NBA Spreads Love The Brooklyn Way With Notorious B.I.G.-Inspired Brooklyn Nets Jerseys

Earlier this week, we showed you the NBA and Nike‘s new “City Edition” jerseys for the Minnesota Timberwolves, which honor Minnesota’s most famous and beloved native son, Prince. Now, the Internet has gotten ahold of the “City Edition” jerseys for the Brooklyn Nets, and they similarly pay homage to a late musical legend with intrinsic ties to the city in question: The Notorious B.I.G. Images of the new Brooklyn Nets “City Edition” uniforms were leaked by Nets beat writer Anthony Puccio via Twitter, and they incorporate the Coogi sweater print that became one of Biggie’s iconic looks at the height of his career. Check out a snap of the new design below:

As last year’s announcement of Nike’s “City Edition” NBA jerseys notes, “The Nike NBA City Edition uniforms represent insights and emotion from the court to the upper deck to the cities’ streets, in pursuit of a unique way to capture each team and its city in a way that respects the past and present of the clubs while also positioning them for the future.”

Much like Prince immediately evokes thoughts of Minnesota, Biggie and his legacy are inherently tied to his native Brooklyn. Over the course of his tragically short career, The Notorious B.I.G. put Brooklyn on the map as a hub for hip-hop talent and used his undying devotion to his hometown and the laid-back yet ferocious patois that it taught him as a springboard for his unmatched lyrical mastery.

Even today, more than 20 years after he was gunned down in L.A. in the midst of a bloody East Coast/West Coast feud, the people of Brooklyn still feel strongly about honoring The Notorious B.I.G. In 2017, controversy broke out when a building owner in Bedford-Stuyvesant, the Brooklyn neighborhood where Biggie grew up, when a building owner tried to take down a two-story mural of the rapper to renovate the property. A petition was launched that garnered thousands of signatures to keep the mural, dubbed “The King of New York,” intact, and it was eventually spared.

And that’s just one of many Notorious B.I.G. murals spread around Brooklyn. Biggie’s face adorns the sides of buildings throughout the NYC borough—and some of the murals even feature the aforementioned Coogi sweater, like this piece that watches over the Bushwick Collective:

Well done to Nike and the NBA once again on their Brooklyn Nets “City Edition” jersey. Just like the Minnesota Timberwolves edition captures the essence of Minnesota through Prince, this new Biggie-inspired design aptly embodies the personality of Brooklyn.
