Umphrey’s McGee Plays 3 2018 Debuts At Fall Tour Opener

159

Chicago-based sextet Umphrey’s McGee are known for their road warrior ways, so the band taking a month off from the road is a rare occurrence. Last night, UM began their 2018 Fall Tour at CrossroadsKC in Kansas City, which marked their first performance since way back on September 1. The group had a few surprises in store, as they fit three 2018 debuts into the setlist.

Umphrey’s McGee kicked off the show and tour with a rare “Glory” opener. Next came “Walletsworth” before the band put the focus on material released since 2007 over the course of the rest of the first set including a “Mantis” split by “No Diablo” and “Day Nurse.” Last night’s second set began with a sequence of “Conduit” > “Phil’s Farm” > “Cherub Rock.” The latter is a Smashing Pumpkins cover that was previously performed on April 28, 2016.

The majority of the frame was a huge “Der Bluten Kat” sandwich featuring “Final Word” and the year’s first “Mullet (Over)” within. “Final Word” hadn’t been played since January. UM closed out the night by dusting off a cover of The Police’s “When The World Is Running Down You Make The Best Of What’s Still Around” for the first time since December 1, 2017.
