Umphrey’s McGee brought out Tierinii Jackson and Ori Naftaly of opening act Southern Avenue for a bust out The Beatles cover on Sunday night at The Capitol Theatre. Professionally-shot full show video of the entire concert in Port Chester, New York can be viewed below.
Jackson added vocals and Naftaly a third guitar to a performance of “Come Together,” which UM had last covered in 2007 — a gap of 1,238 shows. That closed out a first set that began with “The Floor” followed by “Draconian” into “Mulche’s Odyssey.” The rarity “The Pequod,” played just the second time this year, led to the tender it’s not us tune written by guitarist Brendan Bayliss “You & You Alone.” Set one also saw an extended “Bridgeless” and Bayliss belting out the classic “Hajimemashite.”
Set two on Sunday kicked off with the dance-driving instrumental “The Triple Wide.” The it’s us cut “Seasons” came next, leading to a tear through “Plunger” that saw guitarist Jake Cinninger join Joel Cummins on keyboards during the subsequent jam. Bayliss dedicated a cover of “I Ran” to The Cap’s Peter Shapiro who was taking in the show from one of the venue’s balconies. “Resolution” came with its common instrumental jam on The Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood” as well as Cinninger getting bluesy with ZZ Top’s “La Grange,” which hasn’t been covered since 2013. The set closed with “Ocean Billy” and the encore featured “Kula” and the conclusion of “Bridgeless.”
