On Friday night, a number of our favorite high-profile musicians—guitarist Warren Haynes, keyboardist John Medeski, bassist George Porter Jr., and drummer Joe Russo—came together at Port Chester, New York’s iconic music venue, The Capitol Theatre. The event, dubbed One Night Only, brought these four famed artists as well as beloved saxophonist Skerik together for a special fundraiser for debra of America, the Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association that combats a rare and painful genetic connective tissue disorder.

Across the evening, the key quartet of Haynes, Medeski, Porter, and Russo (and with Skerik occasionally coming out to guest during specific segments) worked through an improvisation-heavy show, using a number of covers as a launching pad for extended jams. After an opening jam, the band found its way into Junior Walker & the Allstars’ “Road Runner”, followed up by Allan Toussaint’s “Brickyard Blues”. Two instrumental numbers composed the middle of set one, with the first set ending with renditions of “Set Me Free” and Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind”.

For set two, the group started things Bob Dylan’s “Tough Mama”. Next up was John Scofield‘s “Hottentot”, a fan-favorite number and highlighted Medeski, who appeared on the song’s original recording on Scofield’s 1997 collaboration with Medeski, Martin & Wood, A Go Go. From there, the band worked through additional rock staples like Little Feat’s “Sailin’ Shoes” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Joe” ahead of an extended jam portion based around the Grateful Dead‘s “The Other One”. To close out the second set, the band performed a tune very familiar to Warren Haynes, Gov’t Mule‘s “Rocking Horse”, before ending the night Dr. John’s “Walk On Guilded Splinters”.

For the encore, again the all-star quartet returned to Warren Haynes’ classic catalog, performing the fan-favorite “Soulshine” before closing the night in full with Ray Charles’ “Night Time Is The Right Time”.
